It is not uncommon to find people make a major switch in career paths especially in this internet age and most recently the advent of Corona virus.

In 2020 a lot of people across the globe were displaced from their job because their roles had become redundant, the industries that were most affected were the entertainment, hospitality, aviation industries and many others.

This brought about innovation and creativity in the definition of work; and as well increased career switch specially to make ends meet.

You will agree that the choice of career is one of the most important life decisions anyone can make. What you don’t want to do is make a mistake that would last a lifetime. Below is the ultimate checklist for your career switch;

Career and Self Evaluation

What is the significant reason for leaving your current career for the one you are considering?

Do you need a new job and not a different career?

Are you aware of the practical realities of the career you are considering? How much do you really know? Who have you spoken to?

These are salient questions you need to ask yourself during your evaluation process. They will help you see grey areas clearly, tie up loose ends and make your decision.

Research and due diligence

A bit of this has been mentioned earlier but will now be further explained because of how important this is to your final decision.

As you know, information is key and your personal research as opposed to hearsay is paramount. Everything you need to know about anything is at your finger tips all you have to do is look in the right direction and from the right source.

Naira land and Quora can be helpful but you will likely find conflicting facts and differing opinions on the same matter. In such a situation it would be best to speak to someone who is currently in that career path to have a clearer picture. You can also sign up for industry conferences or join a group on LinkedIn. Use your network in all different ways.

What you shouldn’t do is go on an unending research, you can never know until you start, but it is important to know what you need to know to make headway. Research but don’t take forever.

Create a Career Switch Strategy

This could be from taking helpful courses for your new career trajectory to taking up gigs to get started in building your portfolio of work, internships are great for this if it’s an unrelated industry from your previous job. But if it in a related industry best believe that some skills are transferrable enough to go after a full-time role.

You will need a well curated resume highlighting skills you have honed, what you have done and what you are capable of doing in the most convincing way.

A way to find like-minded people is to join different LinkedIn groups. You can contact them just by becoming a member of the group.

At the very least, send out feelers to family and friends. And talk about your career transition to anyone who will listen — the more people who know what you’re looking for, the more potential there is for a connection.

Signing up or subscribing for Job alerts related to your new career will help to stay abreast of opportunities.

Also preparing and practicing easily answered questions will increase your chances of excelling at interviews.

Career Progression and opportunity

A key factor to consider is the future prospects of that career and the opportunities available to you including how to properly position yourself to assess these opportunities.

This will help you clearly map out your career goals.

A financial buffer

You will need this. This is why it advisable to have up to 6 months of your current income saved because it is highly unlikely that you will be highly renumerated at the beginning of a new career. But the money saved will serve as a cushion until you find your feet.

Have you been considering switching careers? Did you find it useful?

Our money habits have a profound effect when it comes to building wealth and getting wealthy. They literally control – sometimes unconsciously, how we operate each and every day.

If you can improve your money habits you will improve your standard of living and spend money on things that are more important to you and to your goals. Below are six money habits that will change your life.

Budgeting is a game changer; it allows you to be resourceful.

Having good money habits is a learning curve and a lot of it is centered around planning. Planning how you spend your money will never go out of style. A good old budget with details of your monthly expenditure and a specific figure will save you.

Remember to keep it simple, to make it too complicated so that it’s easy for you to track. Having a daily, weekly or monthly spending limit will also aid your self-control with money. What are you waiting for, Budget for next month already!

There a ton of apps out there to help you track your spending easily. Some of them are Editor’s choice, mint and expensify.

Tracking your expense helps you stay in control; it also gives you a helicopter view of your spending pattern and the expense that takes most of your money.

This will help you know what expense to reduce and then provide insight in channeling your resources to more important areas of your life.

Without a doubt your friends and family are important to you. But if you lend money every time you are asked you will end up with no money and a ton of debt.

It fools hardy to lend money to somebody who has no means of paying back. Here’s where credit worthiness is important, drawing the line on borrowing limit if you can’t help it or simply saying no.

You know them, “buy two get one free”. The thing about sales slash it is that you end up spending more money than you think.

It creates an illusion of a good deal but you will most likely end up not using them and then eventually you end up decluttering it all.

Except you are saving up and waiting on a time when the item you want will be sold at a much lower price avoid sales slash to stay within your budget.

Remember it’s all about spending you hard earned money more intentionally.

If you put all your monies in one account, it creates an illusion that you have more money than you actually have. But separating your savings or investment pool from your spending pool will help you spend your money with discretion.

Remember, new habits take time to form and you can’t undo all your bad money habits overtime give yourself a “grace period” and an opportunity to grow into it.

The international women’s day was founded in 1975 and officially recognized by the UN member states in 1977. While it is first and foremost a celebration of the social, political, economic, and cultural gains made by women around the world, IWD also serves to bring attention to necessary progress and reforms that still need to be made—of which there are many.

International Women’s Day is on March 8, it is a day that symbolizes the struggles that women around the world have undergone to gain equality and rights as well as their achievements.

There are more ways than one to celebrate the international women’s day. Here are some innovative ways to celebrate the day;

Wear Colour purple!

Fun fact, purple is the official color of IWD because it was closely associated with the suffrage movement of the early 1900s. Wear purple on purple on purple, and encourage all your friends to do the same!

Join the Social Media Challenge

Social media is powerful, we saw this clearly during the black lives matter and end sars movement.

We can all also choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.

To join the choose to challenge all you have to do is to post a picture with your hands raised in solidarity.

A virtual event

COVID-19 is still and it will change the affect the modalities of this year’s celebration as it did last year. A cautious and safe way of celebrating would be a virtual event that celebrates the achievements of women. The event should inspire women to take the initiative to do more or take the lead.

This could be done by putting the spot light on women in your team or organization with exceptional achievements to motivate and inspire others to do the same.

The itinerary for the event could also be getting to know women’s rights and appraising company policies to see how it works for acknowledges these rights.

Schedule a lunch with colleagues

If it’s too late to put things in place for a seamless virtual event then you can schedule a lunch date!

There are definitely some women at the office you don’t know very well. Get a group together and go out to lunch so you can celebrate all of you. An added bonus?

Women with a strong network of professional women are shown to be more successful than other women. Win-win.

Support women-owned businesses

Supporting businesses that are owned, operated, and controlled by a woman or women helps contribute to equal economic empowerment, representative products and services, and a more prosperous economy overall.

You can personally and deliberately seek out and support local businesses that are women-owned. Share your challenge with your friends and encourage them to do the same!

Acknowledge the awesome women in your life

Sometimes, simple words of encouragement and love can go a long way in lifting someone up and inspiring them to keep going. Whether it’s your mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, girlfriend, or friend – send a text, call or Facetime an important woman in your life to let them know how awesome they are.

In conclusion, involve men and people who identify beyond the gender binary in the conversation and celebration

Oftentimes, most International Women’s Day celebrations and initiatives are targeted at women. However, it’s essential that people of all gender identities are involved in the conversations and become equal advocates for gender parity.

When you’re planning your International Women’s Day activities, ensure you invite and encourage your male friends or teammates to participate and champion gender equality together.

Make sure your gender diverse and non-binary friends and teammates are included and welcomed into the conversation about how we can promote equality for people of all gender identities.

How do you plan to celebrate international women’s day?

Social media is powerful as it is influential and if your business has not yet joined in, your business could be missing a lot of opportunities. Data by HubSpot shows that 92% of marketers agree that it has generated exposure for their business with a majority reporting increased traffic, search engine rankings, and sales.

With the rise of social media, starting a business has never been easier. All you have to do is think up a business name and open a new account on the platform you are most familiar with and voila! and you are a small business owner.

But is that all there is to choosing an online home for your business? Apparently not!

More than half of marketers also admitted using social networking sites to develop a loyal following while reducing (traditional) marketing expenses. To build a loyal following that will translate to sales your business must be on the right platform.

Now, let’s run through some important tips for choosing a social media platform for your business.

Identify your target audience.

Identifying your target audience is a key to business success on social media. When you define your ideal customer profile it helps with tailoring your social media marketing strategies to reach your target audience.

You don’t want to expend advertising funds on LinkedIn when you should have put that same energy on Instagram or Twitter to get better resources; since your target audience are young and vibrant.

You don’t have to be everywhere

A lot of businesses feel the need for their business to be on every social media but the contrary, it’s more important to have a focus. If your business has the resource to be on many platforms by all means go for it. but is more effective to focus on the platform(s) used by your target audience.

If your target audience are professionals you are more likely to find them on LinkedIn, if your business has to do with visuals, Instagram will most likely be a platform to concentrate on and this is very relative.

Another important point to note is that when you focus on one social media platform and grow its engagement, the brand reputation will most likely spill over to other platforms and influence its growth easily.

Define your social media objective/goals

So, you have chosen the ideal platform(s) that’s a great fit for your business, and then what?

This is why there has to be a clear goal(s) in mind besides visibility for the brand. Other goals could be to improving customer service and building customer loyalty; creating a channel for customer feedback; updating your customers on new products, services; or deals, increasing traffic to your website; conduct informal market research; creating a sales funnel; and so on.

What’s important is that the goal has to be clear and overall that your business goals are in are in alignment with your business or sales goals.

There you have it! three important tips for choosing a social media platform for your business.

Which social media platform is your business most active on?

The end of year sales is a good time to clear stock from the last season to make way for the new. The fourth quarter is full of holidays and as a business, you need to be able to leverage them. It is a short quarter and you need to hustle from the get-go.

Set a goal

Before you create a marketing campaign for the end of year sale, you need to decide what you want to achieve and the results you want to get in the end. The goal must be SMART, it must be specific, measurable, attainable, timely, and relevant.

Also, it is about informing your customers about what hours your business is going to be closed and what days your company will be shipping or not shipping items

Existing customers

This is the time to really dial in on existing customers. Frequent conversation with existing customers is vital for the smooth running of this. Understanding their hours of operation or availability, what they are going to be doing is key to serving them. Contact existing customers, ask what their game plan is for the next year.

Referrals close quickly and referrals in the 4th quarter should take up more value, more priority because customers want to make decisions fasters. Prospective clients are going to place more value on that. It just works.

Build Inventory

Knowing how much inventory you have in stock as well as how much inventory the customer has will help the customers maximize their additional inventory and for some, it might be ordering additional quantity. Build up customer inventory.

Competitive Weakness

Competition isn’t only in prices but also in strategies. Keeping business open when competitors are closed is a very easy way to gain customers. Also differentiating your business from the competition is pertinent particularly in value creation and most businesses are more

Calendar planning

Look to get insight into what your client is doing next year, it puts you in a strategic position to serve their supply chain in the current year and the next. Also, in planning the calendar for the festive taking options off the table and making it easier for them to make the decision could be a better strategy than giving them a wide range of options to select from.

Pre-qualify the customer

If there’s something that needs to be set up, get it set up. Decide if the offers will be open to everyone or if they will be based on an eligibility criterion. If it will be based on a criterion you must be crystal clear about them.

Credit Terms

Changing the discount and extending the payment days are both strategies that can help improve end of the year sales

Before offering credit terms on huge purchases, you must have an assurance of the creditworthiness and financial position of customers willing to take up the offer. work with your finance personnel or department in this regard is very key in working with your limits.

Old customer

There’s always more business that you can get from old customers. Reach out to old customers and intimate them about the offers and discounts available to them. It just might be the push they need to make that sale.

Upselling is a sales technique where a seller invites the customer to purchase more expensive items, upgrades, or other add-ons to generate more revenue. It may be selling them more quantity or additional items but whatever it is, upsell is the easiest way to increase the size of the order.

Follow up

The offers and discounts are sure to attract them or leave them drooling but to close the sale you must follow up on every call or message, answer every question and push to close.

From the above-stated points, it’s obvious that there are multiple ways of improving the revenue figures at the end of the year, and only the right strategies that suit the business model should be implemented.

Resources will always be needed in running a successful venture. This can be gotten via grants or investments – either way, you will be required to write proposals or pitches that clearly describe your brand and all you hope to accomplish. Below are 7 guidelines for writing successful proposals –

Storytelling is key

You must be able to show what you plan to do using easy to understand stories. You must also be willing to tell your brand or Organization’s story in a very compelling fashion.

Whoever is reviewing it should be able to grasp the service you’re providing and how the grant would be beneficial. Be very clear about what the proposal says.

Don’t fight the numbers

You need to use the numbers, scratch that, you need to use the right numbers! With the right statistics, you can easily convince anyone about the viability of your product or idea.

Do so easily with numbers and write it in a way that can be easily understood. For example, which of these two statements are easier to grasp?

In two months, $18bn from 37 states were stolen due to corrupt practices by state governments.

In two months, 20 Tertiary universities, 37 Primary schools, 37 Primary Health Care centres could have been built if $18bn wasn’t stolen by state governments.

No lies

Investors, donors, especially the serious ones who want results for their monies can spot when what is being pitched is certainly a fluke. Also, avoid using words or statements like “this technology is the best way to optimize your data”.

That’s a lie! It’s not the best, “Xi Chi” in Tokyo is probably doing a lot better. And both you and the investors know it. Don’t say things you can’t achieve just to impress the recipient.

Well thought-out product

Your product certainly has to be well thought out – many times, some people assume they can get by with doing a sloppy job. Think through your idea very well and get others to look at it with fresh eyes.

Ensure it makes business sense before sending off for an application. The last thing you want is to be blacklisted as an unserious fellow or organisation.

Don’t take rejection personally

Failure or rejection is part of the game, embrace it and be prepared for it – the truth is, your idea won’t be the best all the time and you must be willing to accept this fact wholeheartedly.

Some other times, you simply didn’t write clearly enough to convince the investors or your numbers don’t make business sense.

Either way, you want get all positive feedback from all the opportunities you applied for. Take that to the bank.

Your books are important

Sometimes, what cuts some people out of opportunities is the absence of good financial records. No matter how small you are as a business, keep good records. Excel, Quickbook etc are pretty great Apps to take stock of what’s happening in your business.

Why this is vital is simply because they wouldn’t want to trust you with N100m if they are not convinced you had previously managed N10m successfully.

Start early

Avoid the rush hour, don’t wait for the last minute, prepare in good time for your proposal. Don’t start a few days to closure except under peculiar circumstances. Take your time to put your best foot forward and it would pay off.

I hope you found this useful.

Keep making impact, keep telling the stories of the good work being done, and make some money while doing so.

Cold e-mails may not work for you like cold calls but if you want results you have to send cold emails the right way. Sending a cold e-mail is like going on a first date.

What most people do wrong is being too direct and expecting results from their first cold e-mail and that’s equal to going down on one knee and proposing on the first date, that’s awkward.

According to Wikipedia, a Cold e-mail is a personalized, one-to-one message targeted at a specific individual. It aims to get into a business conversation with that individual, rather than to promote a product or a service to the masses.

Do your research

Don’t push for a meeting if you have not done a thorough research to know if the client you are vying for is a great fit.

You shouldn’t just compile a list of people you perceive to be great prospects and send them all generic e-mails. That’s like spraying bullets without hitting the target and that’s an absolute waste of time.

Here are some basic things to research, the general size of the company; how much they do in revenue, who is in position to make the decisions; the job title of the person you are going after in the company, and so on.

What’s also important to do is to not make assumptions, do the work to discover who your ideal customer is; and go for them.

Make the subject line specific.

If you don’t want your e-mail to come across as spam and end in the trash then the first line of the cold e-mail should be very specific. This should be followed up with an honest and non-generic compliment that is specific to the business.

Put yourself in their shoes.

To send cold emails that get responses you must think about the cold e-mail as a recipient.

We have all received cold e-mails in the past, most of them being too vague and self-indulgent, going on and on about who they are, what they do, and closing the e-mail with a vague promise about additional revenue.

The real question here is, would you give your e-mail a second glance if you received it from another company or client.

Offer value

A message tailored to fit the recipient and a visual representation of a proposed value will most likely start a conversation.

People are mostly narcissistic and the more you can put them in an e-mail, talk about them or show them what you can do for them, the higher your chances of getting a response.

Make the e-mail tailored towards their needs. By telling them something they already know is true, speak it as an expert, and tell them the solutions. Sound human rather than robotic.

No pressure sale

The goal of a cold e-mail is not to close a deal. It’s to find out if the prospect is fine for you. Tools like LinkedIn sales navigator will help you find leads; you can put all of these criteria into a search, list them, and contact them.

What you can also do is to create a lead magnet that will serve as bait and ; sprinkle the e-mail with good humor. E-mails with good humor tend to have more open rates.

Also connecting this with the customer’s pain, the solution including a call to action and making this very clear is also very vital.

Have a follow-up method.

Some people believe that their product or service is so great, that anyone should take a meeting with them. That is incorrect, you still have to present it in a way that creates value for the target. A good cold e-mail will always require good and spaced follow up.

What have you been doing wrongly as regarding cold e-mailing? Let us know.

Have you ever been sitting in a room while listening to an obviously nervous speaker fighting stage fright? How did you feel? Uncomfortable?

As a speaker or presenter, you have a duty to get your audience in a place where they can receive what you are saying. It’s incumbent you as a communicator to make your audience comfortable and you do that by managing your anxiety and fighting your stage fright. Here are five simple ways to fight that fright to finish.

Greet your anxiety
In those few moments before your speech when you get tongue-tied, when your throat tightens, your pulse starts racing, you breathe rapidly, your hands, knees, lips, and voice starts trembling, your palms get cold and sweaty, that nausea and uneasy feeling bites at your stomach, you feel an imminent fart and finally you feel the cold and icy grip of stage fright, understand that it’s only normal and natural.

It’s not peculiar to you, everyone feels it, the greatest speakers of all time, even Shonda Rhimes feels stage fright, she mentioned it in her book. ‘Year of Yes’.

However, you need to learn to manage your anxiety because fundamentally your work is the work of a communicator whether it’s planned or spontaneous.
Just admit that you are nervous and that that’s completely normal and natural. It’s not going to reduce the anxiety but it will stop it from spinning out of control.

Unlike performances where there is a right and wrong way of doing things, in public speaking there is no right or wrong way, nobody knows the note or lines except you.

Practice your speech conversationally-Start with questions
The source of the anxiety is the situation, the reason the situation makes us nervous is that we see it as a performance. To get rid of stage fright we need to reframe this anxiety and see it as a conversation rather than a performance.

This is why asking questions is the easiest way out of anxiety. You put the spotlight on your audience as questions are by nature dialogical; they get your audience involved. Use questions adequately, it could be rhetorical questions where you don’t expect an answer but by asking a question you involve a dialogue because a conversation is a dialogue. It could also be a poll.

Also avoid tone or words that distances you from your audience such as ‘one must consider’, as opposed to ‘you should consider’. Use words used in a conversation.

Before your presentation go into the presentation room if you have access to it. See the room and the people in the room, see them responding positively to your presentation, this desensitizes you such that on the presentation day it no longer appears new.

It would be something you have done before in your mind’s eye.
If you can’t get access to the presentation room before the presentation day, you can find out about the room on the internet and visualize it. It is also important to know the kind of people that will be there. What you should visualize is a positive response to our presentation. Decades of research show that visualization makes people feel more comfortable and less anxious.

Practice Proactively
Exposure is the antidote to phobia, the more you practice, the more you do it, in an environment similar to the real performance. Run it twice the night before and 3 times on the morning of the D-day, do it standing up, do it around a dinner table, do it around a coffee table, do what works. Get all the necessary approvals ahead of time to ensure that your script is ready at least two days before your speech.

Be present-oriented
The future concern makes us nervous so what you can do is to become present-oriented and unconcerned about the future consequence. For some people, it’s music, the sound of music rings them into the moment, some play video games, some count backward from an odd number, and others say a tongue twister.

Tongue twisters will especially help you to verbalize. Nervous speakers often don’t practice out loud, they practice in their head, and as humans what we think doesn’t always translate to what we say. Also, tongue twisters warm up your voice. Just ensure you do the simple things that make you present-oriented.

You can also stretch and breathe. When we are nervous, we tend to take shorter and shallow breaths. Close your eyes, breathe through your nose and out through your mouth then push out your belly with each breath. You don’t overcome stage fright; you adapt to it.

Everyone has their unique technique of fighting stage fright so you have to find the one or two techniques that work for you.
You are an entrepreneur and at some point, you will have to speak publicly, to your employees, to your clients, for presentations, the list is endless. Don’t let nerves hold you back, fight that stage fright.

Which technique will you be trying out first?

Thonia Adigwe is a budding entrepreneur in the food industry, she started Food Culture two years ago. So far, so good, it has been thriving despite all odds. But she has been having countless staff problems and increased staff turnover, a friend had advised her to maximize e-learning platforms.

To be fair, the thought of taking a course on leadership and strategy had been dancing on Thonia’s mind for many months but when you are growing a business, time seems to be an illusion especially with endless to-do lists and customer demands.

However, Thonia needs to hone these skills to become a better business leader and save cost on recruitment. Just like Thonia you may have procrastinated taking that important course for so long after registering and paying for it.

But as a smart entrepreneur, you need to spend more time working on your business than in your business for your business to thrive, taking a course is one way to be a better leader.

Here are some practical ways to maximize any e-learning platform and hone those skills.

Draw up a simple plan
The goal is to complete the course in a time frame. To do this, there must be a simple and feasible plan to maximize that e-learning platform. This plan must put key constraints into consideration such as network connectivity, flexibility, and time.

An e-learning platform requires a good network connection, you want to ensure that you are connected to the best network provider in your location.

Little drops of water make a mighty ocean as such little chunks of time is exactly what you need. Time blocking against your to-do list is a great way to start. This will give insight into the amount of free time you have in a day to effectively and efficiently maximize the e-learning platform.

Ward off distractions
Your cell phone is probably your biggest distraction. You must have caught yourself mindlessly scrolling countless times. To achieve your goal and complete that course you to make a trade-off. The course or a football match, the course or a party, the course or your cellphone. You’ll miss vital points and insights when you try to multitask as you learn.

Take notes
Research shows that we tend to recollect only 20% of what we hear, this is why taking adequate notes is essential. Writing notes also aids listening. You only write what you hear. It also helps to take notes of grey areas for further research, understanding, and comprehension.

Research grey areas
While you are listening and taking notes, it Is not unlikely that you’ll come across concepts and terminologies that you need more clarification on. Unlike traditional learning you have the replay option, it’s important to listen again or do more research.

Review and apply
Reviewing the notes immediately at least 24- hours after a lecture or your retention will drop sharply. This is important for the application. Research has it that students who review their notes within a day recalled 75% of what they had been taught. We learn by repetition and application.

Give feedback
This is could be in the form of star rating, filing a survey form, sending an email, or leaving feedback on the website.
